A man was sentenced to prison for raping a woman after engaging her in Bedford.
Robel Gebremariam noticed the woman walking in Greyfriars in the early hours of 6 July 2024 and approached her.
He walked beside her before leading her to a shop, where he purchased a bottle of alcohol.
Subsequently, he arranged a taxi and took her to his residence, where he served her more alcohol before assaulting her.
The woman reported the incident to authorities shortly afterward.
Bedfordshire Police’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) unit launched an investigation, which led to Gebremariam’s identification through intelligence and CCTV footage.
The 25-year-old, residing on Dudley Street in Bedford, was convicted after a four-day trial held earlier this year.
He was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday, 14 July, to nine years of imprisonment along with an additional year on extended licence.
