RICK FLETCHER CAUGHT IN COVENTRY AND BURTON CHILD PORN SCANDAL
In a disturbing case uncovered in June 2012, authorities apprehended Rick Fletcher, a 31-year-old office worker from Coventry, after a police raid revealed his involvement in the possession and download of nearly 1,200 indecent images of children. The investigation was initiated when law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Fletcher’s workplace located in Burton, uncovering a significant collection of illicit material stored on his work computer.During the raid, police discovered a total of 986 images classified as Category One, which are considered the most severe in terms of abuse depiction. Additionally, they found two images categorized as Category Two, seven images of Category Three, and 22 images of Category Four. These categories are part of a classification system used to rank the severity of child exploitation images, with Category Five representing the most heinous material involving the worst abuse scenarios.
Further investigations revealed that Fletcher had been downloading these images over a period spanning from June 2009 to March 2011, using his work computer. The authorities also seized Fletcher’s personal computer at his residence in Coventry, which contained an additional cache of illicit images. On his home device, police found 127 images of Category One, six of Category Two, 21 of Category Three, 18 of Category Four, and a single image of Category Five, the most serious category. These downloads occurred between February 2009 and March 2011, indicating a sustained period of illicit activity.
Fletcher faced multiple charges in connection with his actions, ultimately admitting to nine counts of downloading indecent images of children. His case was heard at Stafford Crown Court, where Judge Simon Tonking presided. Despite the gravity of the material, Fletcher was spared a custodial sentence. Instead, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years and was issued a sexual offences prevention order that prohibits him from working with children in the future.
Additionally, Fletcher was placed under supervised probation for a period of three years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The court also granted a request for the destruction of the entire collection of child pornography that he had amassed, including the images stored on his devices.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Staffordshire Police emphasized their commitment to protecting vulnerable young people. The force’s child exploitation team, part of the department dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable individuals, continues to work diligently on prevention, safeguarding, and enforcement efforts. The police reaffirmed their stance that reports of child exploitation are taken very seriously and are thoroughly investigated, with ongoing cooperation with other agencies to ensure the safety of children and prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
