RICHARD WATERS FROM BEDFORD JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERED IN POLICE RAID
In February 2007, a man from Bedford was sentenced to a year in prison after police uncovered a significant collection of child pornography during a raid on his residence. Richard Waters, aged 25, was not at his home on Stanley Street when officers arrived to execute the search warrant. However, upon his return, he confided in his mother about his involvement with illegal material, admitting that he had been viewing child pornography.Waters, who had previously been involved with the Scouts in Bedford, was swiftly taken into custody. During police interviews, he openly admitted to the authorities, stating, 'I am guilty,' as was revealed in court proceedings at Luton Crown Court on a Friday. Prosecutor Jason Wolfe detailed that Waters initially accessed adult homosexual content but later found himself in a chatroom where he received two images depicting children. He further confessed to exchanging such images with others within the same chatroom environment.
An examination of the images seized by police revealed a disturbing array of material. Of the total images, 661 were classified at the lowest level, showing erotic poses without any sexual activity. Additionally, there were 210 images categorized from level two to level five, which included more severe content such as sadism and bestiality. The court was informed that following Waters' arrest in June 2005, authorities conducted an investigation into his possible involvement with the Scouts. However, no evidence was found to suggest any misconduct related to his previous activities with the youth organization.
At the hearing, Waters appeared to face sentencing after pleading guilty to 27 counts of making indecent photographs and one count of possessing indecent photographs. His defense lawyer, Alexander Deane, emphasized that Waters had a history of good character prior to this incident. Deane also highlighted the emotional toll the arrest had taken on Waters' family, describing it as causing 'division and unhappiness.'
A probation report painted a picture of Waters as a 'lonely and isolated individual who suffers from depression,' providing context for his actions. Despite this, Judge Jeffrey Burke QC sentenced Waters to a one-year prison term, underscoring the gravity of his crimes with the statement, 'Child pornography not only corrupts those who look at it but perpetuates the creation of it.' Additionally, Waters was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses.
