RICHARD PAINE'S SHOCKING CHILD PORN CHARGES IN BRIGHTON AND NEWHAVEN

In October 2003, a disturbing case emerged involving Richard Paine, a former civilian employee at Brighton's main police station, who has admitted to serious child pornography offenses. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Brighton and Newhaven, where Paine resides.

It was revealed during court proceedings that Paine, aged 30, had been found to possess hundreds of indecent images of young girls on his personal home computer. The images, which were discovered after police executed a search warrant, included photographs of girls aged between six and 17 years old. Many of these images depicted the young girls posing naked, while others showed them engaged in sexual acts with either other children or adults.

The investigation was initiated after officers seized Paine’s computer equipment from his residence on Valley Road in Newhaven on December 5 of the previous year. The police action was part of a broader inquiry into the possession and distribution of child pornography. The forensic analysis of Paine’s computer revealed that the hard disk contained a significant number of indecent images, with some having been overwritten by newer images, indicating an attempt to conceal or delete evidence.

Prosecutor Diane Chann explained that Paine’s role at the police station, specifically within the data centre at John Street police station in Brighton, involved handling sensitive information and passing data from the public to police officers for investigation. While there was speculation that his work might have given him some knowledge about police procedures related to online investigations, there was no evidence to suggest that Paine accessed pornography while at work.

During his court appearance at Hove Crown Court, Paine pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making indecent images of children. He also requested that 195 other similar cases be considered as part of his sentencing. The court was informed that a total of 278 indecent images had been found on his computer, although some images had been overwritten, which suggests an attempt to hide or destroy evidence.

Defense lawyer James Buchannan described Paine as a man of previously good character who had lost his job with Sussex Police due to these allegations. Despite this setback, Paine expressed hope of securing employment in the financial services sector in the future. Mr. Buchannan emphasized that Paine recognized the need for treatment and that his family was supportive, contingent upon his receiving appropriate help.

Judge Charles Kemp sentenced Paine to a community rehabilitation order lasting three years. As part of the sentence, Paine is required to attend a sex offenders’ treatment program during this period. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for five years and to pay £500 towards the costs of prosecution. The case has highlighted the ongoing issues surrounding child exploitation and the importance of vigilance within communities like Brighton and Newhaven.
