NORTHAMPTON MAN RICHARD CROWSON GROOMS AND SEXUALLY ABUSES 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN OXFORD
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming, Richard Crowson, a 21-year-old shop worker from Northampton, was convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl he met through the internet. The girl, whose identity remains protected, resides in Oxford, and the case has drawn significant attention from authorities and the community alike.
According to court proceedings, Crowson initiated contact with the young girl in December 2006 via an online chatroom.
Over the course of their digital interactions, he engaged her in conversations that quickly turned inappropriate, sending her explicit messages and images.
The prosecutor, Nigel Daly, detailed how Crowson's communication escalated to requesting indecent photographs of the girl herself.
After establishing this online relationship, Crowson traveled from Northampton to Oxford, where he arranged to meet her in person.
On the day of the meeting, Crowson made a phone call to ensure that the girl’s parents were not at home, indicating premeditation and awareness of the illicit nature of his actions.
The following month, Crowson engaged in sexual activity with the girl, an act that he later admitted to in court.
The court heard that Crowson's actions were predatory and calculated, with the intent to exploit the young girl for his own gratification.
During the trial at Oxford Crown Court, Crowson pleaded guilty to charges of meeting a child following sexual grooming and engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
The judge, Julian Hall, sentenced him to two years in prison.
Additionally, Crowson was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offenses.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Hall emphasized the seriousness of Crowson’s misconduct, stating, “It is time you grew up.
It seems to me there was no other object to you getting in touch with this girl than to have sexual activity with her.
You talked dirty to her and you sent pictures to each other.
I do not think you realize that is abusive and demeaning to you and to her.” The case underscores the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable minors from exploitation.
