RICHARD ARTHUR AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENDER REVELATION IN GATESHEAD
A man with a criminal past involving sexual offences has faced the consequences after his attempt to conceal his history from a single mother in Gateshead unfolded into a series of legal actions.Richard Robert Arthur, aged 34, hails from the Felling area of Gateshead and was initially convicted in July 2010 for meeting a child under the age of 16 following acts of sexual grooming.
Despite his previous conviction, recent developments revealed that Arthur was violating the strict conditions of his release by repeatedly failing to inform authorities of his whereabouts.
Moreover, he engaged in a new relationship with a woman he met online, an act which further compounded concerns over his compliance with legal restrictions.
Unaware of his criminal background, the woman only discovered Arthur's sex offender status after being contacted by an individual who was aware of his past criminal record.
The woman, a single mother of two, expressed her strong feelings about the situation, praising Northumbria Police for their immediate response and ongoing support.
She stated, "A man like him has no place in my, or anyone’s, family home.
When I ended things, he wouldn’t take no for an answer and then began harassing me.
Luckily, I had the support and protection of Northumbria Police, who not only helped keep my family safe but supported me through the process and I know they are only a phone call away." Following the revelation, she ended her relationship with Arthur and made it clear that all contact was terminated.
However, Arthur’s conduct escalated into persistent harassment, creating an atmosphere of fear and anxiety for the woman.
His actions led to his arrest on charges of breaching his sex offender notification requirements and for domestic abuse-related harassment.
Initially, he was given a seven-month suspended sentence, a legal penalty that allows him to remain free under certain conditions.
Despite this, Arthur continued to contact the woman unlawfully, prompting his rearrest.
He subsequently appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on December 13, where he pleaded guilty to breaching a harassment order, and is now remanded in custody while awaiting sentencing.
Sergeant Elliot Richardson, who led the investigation, has issued an appeal to any other women who may have interacted with Arthur to come forward with their experiences.
He commented, "I would like to thank the victim in this case, who was clearly very concerned when she learned of Richard Arthur's past.
She has shown a great deal of resilience throughout, and I am pleased that we have been able to secure a conviction." This case highlights ongoing concerns surrounding individuals with previous sex offences and their interactions with the community, especially when attempts are made to conceal their histories or breach legal restrictions set to protect potential victims.
