In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wrexham, Rhiannon Scott, a 24-year-old woman, was found guilty of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old schoolboy.The incident came to light after a series of reckless decisions and a camping trip gone awry, which ultimately led to her arrest and subsequent conviction.
Scott had arranged to meet the young boy, whom she had groomed online through role-playing games, under the false pretense of social interaction.
The grooming process involved her pretending to be a barmaid, while the boy adopted various characters during their online exchanges.
It was during this period that she developed an inappropriate and illegal relationship with him.
The situation escalated when Scott and the boy went on a camping trip near Wrexham.
She pitched her tent dangerously close to a river that was swollen and had burst its banks, causing the area to flood.
The flooding trapped Scott and the boy inside the tent for several hours, prompting emergency services to be called to the scene.
The authorities found the teenager hiding inside the tent, which raised immediate concerns about the nature of their relationship.
Further investigation revealed that Scott had believed the boy was in his twenties, a misconception she maintained until she discovered his true age in May of the previous year.
Her claims that she thought he was older were dismissed by the prosecution, who argued that her actions were deliberate and predatory.
At Mold Crown Court in North Wales, prosecutor Anna Pope outlined the details of the case, emphasizing the grooming and sexual activities that took place.
Scott admitted to two charges of meeting a boy aged 14 and 15 with the intent of committing a sexual offence following grooming.
She also pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual activity with a child, including engaging in intercourse with the 15-year-old boy.
In addition to these charges, Scott admitted to causing the boy to view an image of a sexual act involving a person and possessing an indecent photo of a 15-year-old.
Her actions have led to her being sentenced to two years in prison, with additional orders to register as a sex offender for ten years and to adhere to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order that restricts her internet use.
Her own children are currently in the care of their grandmother, reflecting the serious consequences of her actions.
The court proceedings also included a request for a psychiatric report, and the judge, Rhys Rowlands, ordered a pre-sentence report from the probation service to inform the final sentencing.
