MAN HANDED COMMUNITY ORDER AFTER HARASSING WOMAN OVER REVENGE FEARS

A dad set out to upset a woman in revenge after he believed she had "engineered" the return of his wife and daughter to his home country, a court heard.

Reza Sayer was said to have become "irritated" by the woman, prompting him to send her abusive, threatening and misogynistic messages between January 14 and February 8, 2019.

He called her a "w****" multiple times and stupid, leading to a chilling threat that he was coming to stick a piece of wood in her.

"Ultimately, she felt scared to leave her home," explained Luc Chignell, prosecuting, on Wednesday (August 31).

Sayer went on to plead guilty to harassment - an alternative to various aggravating stalking offences, said Mr Chignell, and an offence which is now three years old.

Sentencing Sayer, who had an Afghan Farsi interpreter with him in court, Judge Stuart Rafferty QC said: "In your culture it may be that women are not treated equally to men.

I make no comment about that.

In your culture, women are not to be insulted in the way you set out to insult this woman.

You had a grievance against her because you believed she engineered the return to your home country of your wife and daughter.

"She does not dispute she sought to help your wife because she understood from her you had been abusive to your wife.

Whether that is true or not, I make no finding.

Clearly you were frustrated and clearly you set out to upset this lady in revenge.

The original case against you was damaging property and following her in the street.

Those allegations were not pursued by the prosecution.

I sentence you on the basis of your plea; it was simply the verbal threats via social media that you made to her.

The high-water mark was you threatening to commit a particular sexual act against her with a piece of wood".

If Sayer, 53, of Heaton Close, St Ann's, had been dealt with at Nottingham Crown Court three years ago, he would have gone to prison, said the judge.

But he referred to the delay in the case, Sayer's guilty plea, and that there had been a stalking protection order in place which he has not breached.

This all brought him to the conclusion the defendant could be dealt with in a different way.

Sayer was handed a community order for 12 months, 15 rehabilitation activity days, and a costs order for £340.
