REGINALD WOOD: HORRIFIC CHILD SEX OFFENDER FROM STANFORD-LE-HOPE AND REDCAR SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Stanford-le-Hope and Redcar, Reginald Wood, an 83-year-old man, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offences against children. The sentencing took place at Teeside Crown Court on a recent Friday, marking the culmination of a complex and extensive investigation into decades of abuse.Wood, who resides on Staintondale Road in Redcar, was found guilty of sexually assaulting three young girls over a span of more than twenty years. His crimes included multiple instances of rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency, with some of the offences occurring in the cab of his lorry, at various locations across Essex and Redcar. The investigation revealed that Wood’s predatory behavior was carefully concealed behind a facade of a caring, fatherly figure, which he used to manipulate and exploit his victims.
During the trial held in October, Wood pleaded guilty to a total of 23 charges, which included five counts of rape, twelve counts of indecent assault, and numerous other sexual offences. The court sentenced him to 17 years in prison, with an additional 12 months on licence should he ever be released, effectively ensuring he remains behind bars for the foreseeable future. The judge’s decision reflects the severity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
Wood’s criminal history spans several decades, with his life largely divided between Stanford-le-Hope, Purfleet, and other parts of the country. His victims, some as far away as Australia, were interviewed as part of a comprehensive investigation that sought to uncover the full extent of his offending. The case highlights the importance of victim bravery and the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies across multiple jurisdictions.
Cleveland Police Sergeant Chris Turner commented on the case, stating, “Reginald Wood preyed on his victims and hid his true motives by acting as a fatherly figure. He fully deserves the lengthy prison sentence he has been given today. I would like to commend all of the victims who have shown great strength and bravery in coming forward to report their horrific ordeals and commend the courage they have shown throughout this process. Finally, I would also like to thank police colleagues in Essex and Australia who have helped tremendously in gathering evidence for this case. I hope the victims can now move forward with their lives, knowing that Reginald Wood is now behind bars.”
Prior to his sentencing, Wood had already admitted to numerous charges in October 2017, including 14 counts of indecent assault on a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, and multiple counts of rape and indecency with a minor. At that time, he appeared at Teeside Town Court in Middlesborough, where he pleaded guilty and was released on bail until his sentencing scheduled for January 5, 2018. An order for a curfew and electronic tagging was also imposed as part of his bail conditions.
Reginald Wood’s case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness in protecting vulnerable individuals from predators.
