REBECCA MCHUGH SENTENCED IN HULL FOR ANIMAL WELFARE OFFENSES
Rebecca Dawn McHugh, born on November 8, 1981, and residing in Boulevard, Hull HU3, was convicted in 2019 for leaving animals to die in her abandoned pet shop. McHugh, also known as Becky, abandoned her Hull-based pet shop, leaving behind numerous animals that subsequently perished.Following a prosecution brought by the RSPCA, McHugh has been disqualified from owning caged exotic animals, rabbits, reptiles, guinea pigs, and caged birds for life. In January 2018, she was convicted in her absence of four offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, leading to a warrant for her arrest.
The RSPCA attended Hull Pets and Gardens on Beverley Road in June 2018, nearly five months after the shop closed. RSPCA inspector Jilly Dickinson explained, “The shop closed down in January, and I attended in June after energy suppliers entered to switch off the supply and found the exotics – it appears they had simply been left behind after the shutters had gone down for the final time.”
At that time, five animals were found alive, but only three survived: a corn snake and two bearded dragons. Dickinson noted, “The bearded dragons were underweight, and one of them had a horrendous burden of mites, leaving them unable to open their eyes, lethargic, anaemic and dehydrated.”
Other animals included an underweight leopard gecko suffering from long-standing metabolic bone disease and multiple fractures, as well as eye conditions that were untreatable, which unfortunately led to their being humanely put to sleep. The vet described a Tegu lizard as being in the worst condition he had ever seen—completely emaciated, dehydrated, and lethargic. Sadly, the Tegu died shortly after coming into care.
The surviving animals were handed over to the RSPCA and have since been rehomed.
In terms of sentencing, McHugh received a two-year community order, including 250 hours of unpaid work, along with costs and charges totaling £385. Additionally, she was disqualified for life from keeping caged exotics, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs, and caged birds.
