MANJINDER SINGH FROM HULL JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER EVIDENCE FOUND IN SHOPKEEPER'S DNA IN HULL
DNA evidence linking Manjinder Singh, a Hull shopkeeper, to a sexual assault was presented in court, showing he had touched a woman sexually. Singh denied the allegations of sexual touching and assault that occurred in January last year, but a jury convicted him after a trial held in May.At Grimsby Crown Court, Judge Paul Watson KC sentenced Singh, of Greenwood Avenue, Hull, describing his conduct as “dreadful.” Prosecutor Richard Butters read from a victim impact statement in which the woman expressed feelings of “embarrassment, discomfort, gross, and violated.” He highlighted that the jury had found Singh guilty of two charges.
In his defense, Dale Brook submitted references from Singh’s wife and others, portraying him as a “kind, hardworking family man,” and provided a newspaper clipping emphasizing his charity work. Mr. Brook emphasized: “He has no previous convictions, nothing at all like this. This man is ordinarily a family man.” He added that Singh’s wife would struggle to manage the business alone, as Singh is the only driver.
Judge Watson noted that the references showed Singh was highly regarded, and stressed that his behavior was out of character. The judge acknowledged that the sexual assault had a lasting impact on the victim. He confirmed that DNA evidence had proven Singh's involvement in the assault.
Singh was sentenced to 12 months in prison for each of the two offences, to be served concurrently. Additionally, the court ordered that he would be subject to police notifications for ten years.
