RAYMOND HIGGINS AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN BIRMINGHAM
A once-dangerous sex offender responsible for abusing two young girls during the 1980s and 1990s has been sentenced to prison.Raymond Higgins, who resides on Old Forest Way in the Shard End area, was convicted of eight separate counts of indecent assault committed over a span of more than eight years.
His actions have left a lasting impact on his victims, and his sentencing reflects the seriousness of his crimes.
The 71-year-old Higgins received a 14-year jail term at Coventry Crown Court.
In addition to his prison sentence, he will be required to remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities following his release.
The case only came to a head after Higgins was arrested and interrogated in 2019, when the two women he abused courageously came forward and reported their experiences to the police.
During police interviews, Higgins denied any involvement in the assaults, vehemently claiming that he was innocent.
He even accused his victims of colluding to create problems for him, an assertion that the court dismissed as unfounded.
The court ultimately recognized Higgins as a dangerous offender, a designation that underscores the severity of his offences and his potential threat to the community.
West Midlands Police highlighted the gravity of the case.
Detective Constable Sunita Sharma, from the Public Protection Unit based in Coventry, emphasized the heinous nature of the crimes: “These were a series of appalling assaults on two young girls.
Higgins denied any responsibility when questioned by officers, and we welcome his conviction.
These kinds of offences are taken extremely seriously, no matter how long ago they took place.” This case has drawn significant attention to issues of sexual abuse and the importance of victims coming forward, regardless of the passage of time.
Higgins’s conviction serves as both a warning and a reminder of the justice that can be achieved through perseverance and law enforcement efforts in protecting vulnerable individuals.
