RAUL CIPRIAN COSTA SENTENCED IN WELLINGBOROUGH FOR REPEATED RAPE AND CONTROL
In March 2025, a severe case of domestic abuse and sexual violence culminated in the sentencing of Raul Ciprian Costa, a man from Wellingborough, who was found guilty of multiple heinous crimes against a woman. The incident that led to his conviction began on November 10, 2021, when the victim approached Wellingborough police station, expressing her fear and concern over Costa’s relentless harassment and abuse.According to her account, Costa had subjected her to a prolonged period of severe abuse, which included repeated acts of rape, physical assaults, and threats to her life. She detailed how he exerted control over her daily life through various manipulative and intimidating tactics. This included tracking her phone and vehicle, which allowed him to monitor her movements constantly, and taking control of her finances and personal communications, effectively stripping her of her independence and autonomy.
Following her report, Northamptonshire Police’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit launched a comprehensive investigation into her allegations. The case gained further prominence when Costa, then aged 47 and formerly residing in Wellingborough, was charged with multiple offenses. The legal proceedings culminated in a trial at Northampton Crown Court, which concluded on October 17, 2024. During the trial, Costa was found guilty of two counts of rape, one count of controlling and coercive behavior, and possession of an offensive weapon, specifically a police-style baton that was discovered during the investigation.
On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, the court handed down a significant sentence to Costa. He was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison, comprising an 11-year term for the two counts of rape, with an additional four years on license, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the potential danger he poses to society. Costa chose not to attend the sentencing hearing in person. The court also imposed a four-year sentence for the controlling and coercive behavior, and a two-month sentence for possession of the baton, with all sentences to run concurrently.
In addition to his prison terms, Costa was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offenses. Furthermore, he will remain on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and public safety. The case underscores the importance of addressing domestic abuse and sexual violence, highlighting the legal system’s response to such grave offenses committed in Wellingborough and the surrounding areas.
