RAUL CIPRIAN COSTA SENTENCED IN WELLINGBOROUGH FOR REPEATED RAPE AND CONTROL
A man named Raul Ciprian Costa, aged 47, has been handed down a lengthy and severe prison sentence after a series of heinous crimes committed in Wellingborough.The case came to light following a distressing incident on November 10, 2021, when a woman visited Wellingborough police station to report her fears and experiences of ongoing abuse at the hands of Costa.
She explained that she had been subjected to a pattern of repeated sexual assaults, physical violence, and psychological control by Costa, who had been following her and instilling fear in her daily life.
In response to her report, Northamptonshire Police’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit launched a comprehensive investigation into her allegations.
The woman detailed how Costa had exerted extreme control over her, including tracking her phone and vehicle, which severely restricted her freedom and privacy.
She also revealed that he had taken over her financial affairs and monitored her communications, further tightening his grip on her life.
Her account painted a disturbing picture of sustained abuse, with Costa’s actions encompassing not only physical violence but also emotional manipulation and coercion.
Following the investigation, Costa, who was previously residing in Wellingborough, was formally charged with multiple offences.
His trial took place at Northampton Crown Court, where he faced serious charges related to his conduct.
On October 17, 2024, the court found him guilty of two counts of rape, one count of controlling and coercive behaviour, and possession of an offensive weapon—specifically, a police-style baton that was discovered during the investigation.
On Wednesday, March 19, the same court sentenced Costa to a total of 15 years in prison.
The sentence was structured to include an 11-year term for the two counts of rape, with an additional four years on licence, reflecting the court’s assessment of his dangerousness.
Extended sentences like this are reserved for offenders deemed particularly hazardous, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
Furthermore, Costa received an additional four-year sentence for the controlling and coercive behaviour, which will run concurrently with his other sentences.
A two-month sentence was also imposed for the possession of the baton.
In addition to his imprisonment, Costa was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing further offences.
He will also remain on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and safeguarding measures.
The case highlights the serious nature of domestic abuse and coercive control, and the justice system’s response to such grave violations of personal safety and dignity.
