RAJESH LAMA FROM BIRMINGHAM CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN NEWPORT HOTEL SCANDAL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Rajesh Lama, a 48-year-old teacher from Birmingham, was apprehended after attempting to meet what he believed was a young girl for sexual purposes.The incident unfolded in Newport, where Lama had traveled and booked a room at the Waterloo Hotel, only to be caught in a sting operation conducted by a group of vigilant paedophile hunters.
According to court proceedings, Lama had engaged in online conversations with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.
The chat was facilitated by a fake account created by the group, known as 'Petronus,' which posed as a teenage girl in various chat rooms.
The account remained inactive until it was contacted by someone claiming to be 'Jaz Singh,' who was later identified as Lama himself.
Prosecutor David Pugh detailed that the online exchanges between 'Sam,' the supposed minor, and 'Jaz Singh' persisted daily over more than two weeks in May 2017.
During these conversations, Lama falsely claimed to be 25 years old, despite his actual age being 47.
He also boasted about taking photographs of women in lingerie and repeatedly requested provocative images of 'Sam,' including photos of her in her school uniform.
Further evidence revealed that Lama had made arrangements to meet 'Sam' in Newport.
He booked a hotel room at the Waterloo Hotel and offered to pay her £100 for the meeting.
When he arrived at the hotel, he was contacted and asked to meet 'Sam' in the car park.
It was at this point that members of the paedophile hunting group detained him.
During police interviews, Lama initially admitted to knowing that his actions were wrong.
However, he later chose to remain silent, refusing to answer questions and declining to provide the password to his mobile phone.
The authorities found in his possession items such as baby oil, condoms, and alcohol in his hotel room, which further indicated his intentions.
In court, Lama pleaded guilty to six sexual offences, including attempting to communicate sexually with a child and attempting to engage a minor in sexual activity.
Judge Thomas Mervyn Hughes acknowledged Lama's long-standing career as a science teacher at Hodge Hill School in Birmingham but emphasized that his profession did not mitigate the seriousness of his actions.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, Lama was ordered to participate in a 15-day sexual offender rehabilitation program, complete 180 hours of unpaid community work, and report his address to police for the next decade.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and community groups to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predators.
