PHILLIP BRINDLE'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN LADOCK AND WIGAN LEAD TO LIFE SENTENCE

In a chilling case that has shocked the communities of Ladock and Wigan, a man named Phillip Brindle has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a series of heinous crimes committed over a span of several years. The offences, which took place primarily at his former residence in Wigan, Greater Manchester, between 1992 and 1998, involved the manipulation, drugging, and sexual assault of young women who believed they were participating in legitimate modelling opportunities.

Brindle, aged 54 at the time of sentencing, was a taxi driver by profession and had previously convinced numerous women to pose for photographs under the guise of helping their modelling careers. However, his true intentions were far more sinister. He would lure these women, many of whom were teenagers with low self-esteem, into his home with promises of professional advancement. Once there, he would drug them, rendering them vulnerable and unable to resist his advances.

The court heard that Brindle, aided by his now-deceased wife Victoria, who was implicated in the abuse, would manipulate the victims into posing nude or semi-nude. His wife played a significant role in persuading the women to participate, often helping to facilitate the assaults. Jurors were told that Brindle would then film himself attacking these women, capturing their helplessness and degradation on camera. The films, which served as evidence in the case, were discovered in a storage shed rented by Brindle in Tregony, Cornwall, in November 2008. Police also uncovered a disturbing list of girls’ names labeled as “hobbies,” suggesting a premeditated and organized approach to his crimes.

During the investigation, authorities found footage showing Brindle checking the eyelids of his victims to ensure they remained unconscious during the assaults. This evidence confirmed the systematic nature of his abuse. Police managed to identify five women from the footage, leading to charges related to their victimization. It was revealed that Brindle had also filmed at least three other women, although two of these victims could not be traced, and one was too ill to assist with the investigation.

Prosecutor Kannan Siva described Brindle’s actions as systematic and predatory, emphasizing that he targeted vulnerable young women, often teenagers, promising them careers that he had no intention of fulfilling. Instead, he exploited their trust and low self-esteem, drugging them and filming their abuse without their knowledge or consent. The court was told that Brindle made the victims sign what he called “model release forms,” which he used to justify his actions. One such form was signed by an 18-year-old woman with whom he had a consensual sexual relationship, accompanied by a handwritten note stating her agreement to obey his commands and remain solely for him.

Brindle’s refusal to attend court during his trial and sentencing was noted, and Judge Mark Brown described him as an “arch manipulator” and “sexual predator.” The judge condemned Brindle’s actions, highlighting his dangerous nature, distorted thinking, lack of empathy for his victims, and his desire to control and manipulate. The court sentenced him to serve a minimum of 11 years before he could be considered for parole. Additionally, Brindle was placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Stuart Ellis of Devon and Cornwall Police spoke about the case, stating that both Brindle and his wife had preyed on women in the Pemberton area, subjecting them to “horrific ordeals.” He praised the bravery of the victims, who had endured this ordeal for over 15 years, for coming forward and helping bring Brindle to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by manipulative predators and the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse.
