PETER YATES FROM BIRMINGHAM SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN LEICESTER
In a case that has shocked the community, Peter Yates, a 46-year-old man from Birmingham, was sentenced to nine years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offences committed against three young girls.The crimes, which spanned over several decades, have left the victims deeply traumatized and scarred for life.
Yates’s offending history dates back to his teenage years, with the earliest known abuse occurring when he was just 14 or 15 years old.
His first victim was a 13-year-old girl, whom he assaulted through sexual touching.
The abuse only stopped when she threatened to disclose his actions to others, highlighting the manipulative and predatory nature of his behavior.
The judge, Philip Head, emphasized the severity of the impact on her, noting that she struggled with alcohol abuse, engaged in self-harming behaviors, and experienced suicidal thoughts as a direct result of the trauma inflicted upon her.
The second victim was 15 years old at the time of the abuse, which occurred when Yates was 34.
This indicates a significant age gap and a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
The third victim was initially abused at the age of 11, while Yates was in his 40s.
During this abuse, he told her, “This is our secret,” further demonstrating his manipulative tactics.
The court heard that Yates continued to groom her through a series of inappropriate sexualized text messages, which referenced adult sexual activity.
He pressured her to delete these messages, warning her that failure to do so would make him appear as a paedophile.
Two years after the initial abuse, Yates sexually assaulted the third victim again, leading to her eventual disclosure and his subsequent prosecution.
During police interviews, Yates attempted to downplay his actions, trying to minimize the extent of his misconduct, which the judge noted as an attempt to evade responsibility.
Yates pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of indecent assault on his first victim, with offences dating back to 1985 and 1986.
He also admitted to two sexual assaults on his second victim, both occurring on the same day in 2006.
The latest charges involved two counts of sexual activity with a child, relating to the third victim, with the most recent offence committed just last year.
In addition to his prison sentence, Yates was ordered to serve at least two-thirds of his term before being eligible for parole.
The court also extended his license period by an additional six years, ensuring ongoing supervision.
Furthermore, he was placed under a lifetime sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits him from having any unsupervised contact with females under 16, including on social media.
His name and future addresses will be registered on the sex offender register indefinitely, ensuring continued monitoring and public awareness of his status.
