PETER WRIGHT JAILED FOR 15 YEARS IN BIRMINGHAM AND BRADFORD FOR RAPE OF TEENAGE GIRL
In a case that has shocked the communities of Birmingham and Bradford, Peter Wright has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple heinous sexual offenses against a teenage girl. The Bradford Crown Court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which spanned approximately 16 months and inflicted severe psychological trauma on the young victim.
According to court reports, the girl endured repeated assaults at the hands of Wright, whose actions left her profoundly affected in every aspect of her life.
The emotional scars were so deep that she resorted to self-harm frequently, both during and after the period of abuse.
She also turned to smoking and alcohol as coping mechanisms to numb the mental anguish caused by Wright’s predatory behavior.
Prosecutor David McGonigal read a statement from the victim during the trial, revealing that she had previously overdosed in an attempt to escape the overwhelming pain inflicted by Wright.
The statement painted a picture of a young girl suffering from attachment and trust issues, with a persistent fear of men, which adversely impacted her performance at school.
The prosecutor emphasized that the girl believed her academic potential was compromised due to the trauma she endured.
Furthermore, the court was informed that after she reported the abuse, her fears intensified.
Wright, who was 53 years old at the time and formerly resided in Bradford before moving to Birmingham, was perceived as a threat to her safety.
The victim expressed her ongoing fear that Wright might retaliate or harm her for speaking out.
Her anxiety was compounded by her belief that he had pleaded not guilty, which left her feeling hopeless and helpless.
Following a comprehensive trial, the jury convicted Wright of four counts of rape and one count of sexual activity with a child.
The court noted that two of the rape charges involved single incidents, while the remaining charges involved at least two separate occasions.
Wright was acquitted of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape, but the convictions for the other offenses stood.
Judge Robert Bartfield addressed the court, highlighting the profound impact Wright’s actions had on the victim.
He stated, “The impact on her has been considerable.
There is no area of her life that your conduct has not affected.” The judge underscored that Wright’s denial of guilt did not mitigate the severity of his crimes and emphasized the psychological harm inflicted upon the young girl, affecting her education, mental health, and overall well-being.
In sentencing, Judge Bartfield took the count of rape as the primary basis for the penalty, imposing a 15-year prison sentence on Wright.
Additionally, Wright received a concurrent sentence totaling 35 years for the other convictions.
As part of his sentence, Wright will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and will be required to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the public from further harm.
