PETER STEAD'S HORRIFIC SEXUAL ASSAULT IN LEEDS: A CHILD'S TRAUMA AND JUSTICE SERVED
In April 2011, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse unfolded in Leeds, involving a man named Peter Stead.The incident centered around a 12-year-old girl who was subjected to grooming and sexual assault by Stead, a 49-year-old resident of Kingfisher Mews, Morley.
The case drew significant attention from the local community and the courts, highlighting the grave nature of the crime and the impact on the young victim.
According to court proceedings, Stead employed manipulative tactics to gain the trust of the young girl.
He showered her with gifts, including four dresses and a pair of high-heeled shoes, during a visit to the White Rose shopping centre in Morley.
The gifts were part of his grooming strategy, aimed at establishing a sense of closeness and dependency.
That same evening, Stead took the girl out for a meal, after which he committed the sexual assault.
During the court hearing, prosecutor John Bull detailed the sequence of events, revealing that Stead later asked the girl to “forgive and forget” the incident.
Despite his plea, the girl confided in her mother about the assault, leading to Stead’s arrest.
Evidence collected by police included traces of saliva found on the girl’s underwear, which linked Stead to the crime.
Stead admitted to the charges of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, and he was subsequently sentenced to nine years in prison.
His legal representative, Richard Reed, expressed that his client was remorseful and emphasized that no violence or threats were used during the assault.
The victim’s mother, speaking after the sentencing, expressed her relief at the severity of the punishment.
She described her daughter as scared and unable to trust others, suffering from sleep disturbances and emotional trauma.
Despite her pain, she also conveyed hope, stating, “But she is a strong girl and she will get through it.” Judge Paul Hoffman delivered a stern judgment, condemning Stead’s actions as a calculated act of grooming.
He highlighted the significant age difference—Stead being four times the age of his victim—and the manipulative tactics used to lure her.
The judge emphasized that the assault had long-lasting psychological effects on the girl, who would likely carry the trauma for years to come.
As part of the sentence, Stead was ordered to register on the Sex Offender’s Register for life and was subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to children in the future, as noted by the probation officer involved in the case.
