PETER KINAHAN CAUGHT IN LISKERARD CHILD IMAGE SCANDAL

In February 2012, a troubling case unfolded at Truro Crown Court involving Peter Kinahan, a 19-year-old resident of Looedown, Liskeard. The court heard that Kinahan had been found in possession of indecent images of children on his computer, a revelation that has sparked concern and scrutiny within the local community.

According to court proceedings, Kinahan claimed that the images were downloaded unintentionally while he was searching for adult pornography. This assertion was met with skepticism by the presiding judge, Christopher Harvey Clark, QC, who emphasized the seriousness of possessing such material. Judge Clark remarked that anyone who downloads indecent images of children is committing a criminal offense, regardless of intent, and he acknowledged Kinahan’s background, stating, "You come from a good family and I have little doubt that you feel deep humiliation at having to come to Truro Crown Court today."

During the hearing, Kinahan explained to the authorities that the incident was accidental. However, given his prior history, including a referral order issued in July 2010 for similar offenses, the judge expressed doubt about the innocence of the claim. Judge Clark noted, "I hope that is the case, although in view of your referral order, I take that with some scepticism."

Defense counsel Piers Norsworthy provided a positive update on Kinahan’s current situation, revealing that he was doing well academically at St Austell College and was employed at a local garage. Recognizing the potential for rehabilitation, Judge Clark decided against immediate imprisonment. Instead, he opted to impose a community order lasting twelve months, which includes supervision and monitoring.

Furthermore, Kinahan was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next five years, a measure intended to ensure ongoing oversight. The judge issued a stern warning, stating, "I must warn you that if you were to be caught accessing images of children again and come back before this court, it is almost certain that you would go to prison." This case underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding the possession and distribution of child exploitation material, and the court’s decision reflects a balance between punishment and the opportunity for reform.
