PETER GAVIN BRADFORD SCOUT LEADER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF GIRLS IN KIRKLEES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Peter Gavin, a scout leader from Bradford, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of multiple sexual offences involving two underage girls. The crimes took place over a period of time and included abuse at a scout camp, highlighting a gross breach of trust and safeguarding protocols.
Gavin, who was entrusted with the safety and well-being of young scouts in Kirklees, had exploited his position to commit these heinous acts.
During the sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, Judge James Spencer QC emphasized that Gavin had undergone the necessary safeguarding training, which made his actions even more reprehensible.
The judge stated, "You knew as well as anybody else it was illegal to do what you did and I am quite sure you only did it for your own sexual gratification." Prosecutor Mark McKone detailed the timeline of Gavin’s misconduct, revealing that the offending began in early 2015 when the two girls started to communicate with him online.
Gavin initially followed them on Twitter, and as their online interactions continued, he recognized their identities and continued to engage with them privately.
An inappropriate online relationship then developed between Gavin and one of the girls, who was under 16 at the time.
Gavin later admitted to police that he was aware she had a “crush” on him, and during their exchanges, they discussed sexual topics.
The girl even sent Gavin explicit pictures of her breasts, while he sent her a photograph of his private parts.
Relations between Gavin and the girl deteriorated after a breakup, which occurred prior to a scout camp in May of the previous year.
It was during this camp that Gavin committed further offences involving the second girl.
He persuaded her to meet him late at night at a toilet block he knew could be locked from the inside.
Once inside, Gavin kissed her, undressed her, and engaged in sexual touching.
He also persuaded her to perform oral sex on him before they both returned to their respective tents.
The court heard that Gavin was aware the girl was upset by what had transpired, as he later apologized to her during police interviews.
Gavin, aged 24 and residing at Chats Wood Fold, Oakenshaw, Bradford, pleaded guilty to one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual activity with a child.
As part of his sentence, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Judge Spencer highlighted the gravity of Gavin’s actions, noting that he had encouraged the first girl to pursue an online relationship with him rather than discouraging her, and then proceeded to groom and exploit the second girl.
The court’s decision underscores the importance of safeguarding young people and the serious consequences faced by those who breach this trust in such a heinous manner.
