PETER BATTENSBY LEEDS MAN SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS FOR DECADES-OLD RAPE AND INDECENT ASSAULTS
In a significant case that has spanned over three decades, Peter Battensby, a man from Leeds, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 21 years for a series of serious sexual offences. The offences, which include rape, indecent assault, voyeurism, and sexual assault, were committed between February 1987 and recent years, revealing a disturbing pattern of abuse that has profoundly affected multiple victims.
Peter Battensby, now aged 63, appeared before Leeds Crown Court to receive his sentence after being found guilty of 14 separate charges earlier this month.
The court heard that the offences involved vulnerable victims, some as young as 12 and 15 years old at the time of the assaults.
The gravity of the crimes was underscored by the detailed testimonies and personal statements read out during the proceedings.
Prosecutor Matthew Bean described how Battensby would take one of his victims to a remote location, where he attempted to carry out a rape.
Fortunately, the victim managed to fight him off, preventing further harm.
The court was also informed that another victim, when aged around 13 or 14, was taken to a nightclub by Battensby, where he bought her alcohol and later took her to get a tattoo, further illustrating the manipulative and predatory nature of his actions.
Victims' personal statements painted a harrowing picture of the long-lasting emotional damage inflicted by Battensby.
One victim stated, “He ruined my life, destroyed my childhood and I did not want a boyfriend or relationship as I had been labelled as damaged goods.” Another victim expressed the profound impact of the abuse, saying, “It is difficult to put into words the emotional damage this has caused over the years and continues to cause to this day.
I lived in fear and felt humiliated, worthless and degraded.
My confidence and self-esteem have been destroyed.” Judge Rodney Jameson, QC, delivered the sentence, emphasizing the extensive harm caused by Battensby over the course of 30 years.
The judge remarked, “Over the course of some 30 years you have blighted the lives of so very many people.
It is obvious from the victim impact statements that the circumstances in which they were committed have proved devastating and lifelong.” The judge also condemned Battensby’s lack of remorse, noting that he dismissed the victims’ accounts as lies and fantasies, which further demonstrated his callous attitude towards his crimes.
With the 21-year prison sentence, the court aims to reflect the severity of the offences and the lasting trauma inflicted upon the victims.
This case highlights the importance of justice for survivors of long-standing abuse and serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact such crimes can have on individuals and communities alike.
