PETER ALLAN FROM EAST KILBRIDE ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL IN EAST RENFREWSHIRE
In October 2011, a disturbing case involving a teacher from East Kilbride made headlines after he was found in possession of nearly 170 disturbing images and videos depicting children. Peter Allan, aged 28, who was employed as a physical education teacher at Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire, was caught in a scandal that shocked the local community and drew international attention.Allan's arrest was the result of an extensive investigation conducted by Interpol, which led to the identification of his illicit activities. During the course of the investigation, officers based in Luxembourg traced the digital footprints to Allan, who had downloaded a total of 167 repulsive images and moving pictures last year. The investigation then prompted a search of his residence in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, where authorities seized a laptop and an external hard drive for forensic analysis.
The subsequent court proceedings revealed the full extent of Allan's possession of indecent material. At an earlier hearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court, he admitted to being in possession of these images and videos, which had been taken or downloaded between March 13 and December 7 of the previous year. The images included more than 80 still photographs of children, many of which had been deleted but were recovered from the laptop's storage. Additionally, authorities uncovered 22 videos of children on the laptop itself, with a further 65 videos found stored on the external hard drive.
Despite the severity of the charges, Allan was not sentenced to prison. Sheriff Ray Small ordered that he be placed on probation for a period of three years. Furthermore, Allan was registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the same duration and was mandated to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service. The court's decision reflected a complex legal process, balancing the nature of the offenses with considerations of rehabilitation.
During the hearing, Allan’s legal representative, Lorraine Glancy QC, informed the court that her client had resigned from his teaching position following his arrest. An official spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council confirmed that Allan had been suspended from his teaching duties since December of the previous year. The council also stated that, after pleading guilty, Allan had faced formal disciplinary measures. The spokesperson emphasized that Allan’s personal actions were a betrayal of his colleagues and did not reflect the values or reputation of Eastwood High School or the wider educational community in East Renfrewshire.
