PAUL WILSON SENTENCED TO LIFE IN BIRMINGHAM FOR CHILD ABUSE AND GROOMING
A nursery worker named Paul Wilson, aged 21, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after admitting to a total of 47 charges related to the sexual abuse and grooming of children.Wilson, from Nechells, Birmingham, was convicted of raping a toddler at Little Stars Nursery in Birmingham, an act he filmed on his mobile phone.
He also groomed 22 other girls over the internet.
Prosecutors highlighted that concerns expressed by other nursery staff members did not prevent the ongoing abuse.
Wilson started working at Little Stars Nursery in October 2009.
Despite six staff members raising concerns about his conduct before his arrest on January 5 this year, he continued to work there, even after receiving a written warning.
The judge described the situation as “a matter of some incredulity” that he was not further disciplined for his blatant disregard of nursery rules.
The Birmingham Safeguarding Trust board has initiated a serious case review into the incident and has stated they will not comment further at this stage.
During the sentencing, Mrs.
Justice Macur characterized Wilson's crimes as “chilling, vile and depraved.” She emphasized the impact of his actions, noting that he had caused unknown harm to both the toddler and more than 20 young girls he online groomed.
“You are highly deviant, highly manipulative.
You are intelligent and the more dangerous for being so,” she said.
The court was told that Wilson, of Newbold Croft, was arrested after one of the girls he had groomed reported him.
He contacted 22 girls via the internet, convincing them to perform sexual acts on webcam, often recording these acts and using the images to blackmail the victims.
The victims ranged in age from 12 to 15.
Wilson used various aliases on social media platforms to manipulate and threaten the girls into compliance.
Wendy Bounds, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, stated: “Wilson preyed on young girls he met in internet chat rooms.
He hid his real identity and convinced the girls to turn on their webcams, enabling him to see them in intimate situations.” She explained that if his direct approach failed, Wilson would threaten or use other aliases to gain their trust, coercing them into performing sexual acts, which he would then watch.
“The teenage girls did not realize that they were in effect allowing a stranger into their bedrooms with a camera,” she added.
Photos of one girl were shared with another male.
Wilson's offending escalated to the point of raping a vulnerable child while working at the nursery, despite concerns raised by staff about his conduct and the appropriateness of his relationship with the child.
Ultimately, it was only one girl’s report to police that led to his arrest.
Earlier in the case, Ofsted issued a statement confirming it had referred the allegations to Birmingham City Council, the lead safeguarding authority, and that they conducted a joint investigation with the local authority.
Ofsted expressed regret that the abuse was not identified sooner and apologized for any additional distress caused.
In June, Wilson pleaded guilty to two charges of rape, 16 charges of inciting and causing a child to engage in sexual activity, 25 charges concerning indecent images of children, and three charges of distributing such images.
He is now serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years.
