PAUL WARD LEEDS TEENAGER SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF BABY IN LEEDS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Leeds, a 19-year-old man named Paul Ward from Edinburgh Avenue, Armley, was convicted of heinous crimes involving the severe abuse of a 10-month-old baby. The incident, which took place on January 26, resulted in life-threatening injuries to the infant, nearly claiming his life and leaving him with lasting physical trauma.
According to court proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, Ward subjected the helpless baby to a brutal assault involving three different items of cutlery.
The severity of the injuries was such that the baby was bleeding profusely and was in excruciating pain.
Witnesses and medical reports revealed that the child was in a state of distress, fitting and turning blue, indicating the critical nature of his condition.
The injuries inflicted were so severe that the baby had to be rushed to hospital, where he was revived twice during his emergency treatment.
The medical team discovered that the child had suffered a ruptured bowel, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.
The extent of the damage was so profound that the baby now has a colostomy bag, a permanent reminder of the trauma he endured.
The court heard that the injuries were not only physically devastating but also caused significant emotional and psychological harm.
Paul Ward faced multiple charges, including one count of wounding with intent, which he admitted.
However, he denied three additional charges of assault by penetration of a child under 13.
Despite his denial, a jury at Leeds Crown Court found him guilty of these charges after a thorough trial.
The judge, Neil Clark, sentenced Ward to 14 years in a young offender institution, with an additional eight-year extension to his license upon release, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
During sentencing, Judge Clark expressed his outrage at the severity of the abuse, stating, “On two occasions he nearly passed away.
Doctors said the injuries to his bowel were acutely painful.
It would have been obvious to you that he would have been in distress and severe pain and yet you continued to do it.
You did that not just intending serious harm, but with a sexual motive.
This is perhaps the most unpleasant abuse of a baby that I have ever come across.” Law enforcement officials, including Detective Inspector Lawrence Bone of the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit, condemned Ward’s actions.
DI Bone emphasized the callousness of Ward’s conduct, noting that he was found guilty of appalling sexual abuse against a child he was supposed to care for.
He described Ward as a dangerous individual with little regard for the pain and suffering inflicted upon the victim.
The victim’s prognosis remains uncertain, and the case has left a lasting scar on the community.
As part of his sentence, Paul Ward’s name will be entered into the sex offender register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and the devastating consequences of such heinous acts.
