PAUL WAITES FROM LEEDS AND ARMLEY JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND ONLINE ABUSE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Leeds, particularly the Armley area, Paul Waites, a 36-year-old former teacher, has been sentenced to six years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young girls and the possession of a vast collection of indecent images of children.

Waites, who resided in the Heights, Armley, was found guilty of filming himself engaging in sexual acts with five girls aged between 13 and 15. These recordings, which were discovered during a police investigation, depict a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned over several years. The police seized his mobile phone and uncovered footage that not only included recordings of the abuse but also contained up to 600 images of child sexual exploitation downloaded from the internet over a four-year period. Among these images were photographs of children as young as three years old being subjected to abuse, highlighting the severity and depravity of the crimes committed.

The investigation was triggered when Waites attempted to groom what he believed was a 12-year-old girl through an online chatroom. Unbeknownst to him, he was actually communicating with an undercover police officer. During this online interaction in September 2007, Waites asked the officer if she was a virgin and performed a sexual act on himself via webcam, an act that was part of a sting operation conducted by law enforcement authorities.

Following his arrest, police examined Waites’s computer and found a significant amount of illicit material. During police interviews, Waites initially denied the allegations, claiming he had been a teacher at a school that covered a broad age range from primary to secondary education, and also taught dance. However, the evidence against him was overwhelming.

Prosecutor Ian Howard stated that Waites had admitted to 26 offences, including five counts of sexual activity with a child, 11 counts of possessing indecent images of children, five counts of making indecent images, and two counts of distributing such images. The evidence also revealed that the recordings on his mobile phone showed him abusing the five teenage girls, all of whom were aged 15 at the time.

Judge Sally Cahill QC delivered the sentence, emphasizing the danger Waites posed to young girls. She sentenced him to six years in prison, with an additional three-year supervision period following his release. The judge also made a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits Waites from ever working with children or accessing any internet sites related to children. His name will be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

After the sentencing, Detective Constable John Higgins of West Yorkshire Police issued a stark warning to parents, urging them to vigilantly supervise their children’s internet use. He remarked that Waites did not fit the stereotypical image of a paedophile, describing him as a good-looking, professional man with a sexual interest in children, thereby dispelling myths about the typical profile of offenders involved in online child exploitation.
