PAUL TODD LEEDS CHILDREN'S TRAMPOLINE PERVERT CAUGHT AND SENTENCED
In December 2007, a disturbing case involving a Leeds resident named Paul Todd came to light, revealing a pattern of disturbing behavior centered around his obsession with young girls.Todd, aged 47, who has a criminal record dating back to 1975 for indecency offenses involving females, was found guilty of multiple serious charges related to the creation and possession of indecent images of children.
The case was heard at Leeds Crown Court, where Judge James Stewart QC delivered a stern sentence, sentencing Todd to a year in prison for public protection.
Todd had pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent pseudo-photographs of a child, along with two additional charges of voyeurism.
The judge described Todd’s conduct as “every mother’s nightmare,” emphasizing the severity of his actions and the potential danger he posed to the community.
Prosecutor Michael Smith detailed the police operation that led to Todd’s arrest.
Authorities executed a warrant at his flat located in Hawksworth, Leeds, where they uncovered a disturbing collection of material involving children.
Neighbors had previously reported seeing Todd using a digital camera, which prompted police to intervene.
Upon entering his residence, officers encountered a locked kitchen door, which they forced open.
Inside, they found the curtains drawn and a video camera mounted on a tripod, with wires connecting it to the television in the lounge.
Further inspection revealed a pair of binoculars on the kitchen worktop.
Police also discovered over 300 videos and DVDs containing images of children, most of whom appeared to be under the age of seven.
Many of these videos depicted Todd himself filming children in underwear or clothing, raising serious concerns about his intentions.
Additionally, officers found more than 1,000 photographs, predominantly of children, many cut from naturist magazines and altered through digital superimposition to create sexually explicit images.
During police interviews, Todd admitted to being a loner who lived with two cats.
He claimed that the video camera was used for watching the street as a form of protection and to monitor debt collectors, rather than for any malicious purpose.
However, the evidence collected painted a far more troubling picture of his activities.
Representing Todd, solicitor Thomas Rushbrooke acknowledged his client’s fascination with young girls and stated that Todd had expressed a desire for help, although he was uncertain how to obtain it.
The court was told that Todd’s behavior was a gross invasion of privacy, but importantly, none of the children depicted in the images had been exploited for sexual purposes.
Judge Stewart concluded the hearing by reiterating the horror of such offenses, emphasizing that the taking of photographs of children by someone with paedophile tendencies is a nightmare scenario for any parent.
While acknowledging the invasion of privacy involved, he noted that the images did not show actual abuse, but the nature of Todd’s collection was nonetheless deeply disturbing and deserving of significant punishment.
