PAUL STATON FROM MIDDLESBROUGH JAILED FOR BREACHING SEXUAL OFFENCES ORDER IN TEESSIDE
In a case that highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of young children and the enforcement of court orders, Paul Staton, a 39-year-old resident of Langridge Crescent in Middlesbrough, has been sentenced to ten months in prison for violating a sexual offences prevention order.The order was originally imposed by magistrates in November 2009 following a previous indecent assault committed by Staton.
On June 25 of this year, officers from Cleveland Police’s Public Protection Unit conducted a routine visit to Staton’s residence as part of their regular monitoring procedures.
During this visit, the officers inquired whether he had any contact with minors under the age of 18.
Staton responded negatively, asserting that he had not interacted with any children.
Despite his denial, the police officers remained suspicious and initiated a detailed investigation into his activities.
As part of their inquiry, authorities traced the mobile phone used by Staton, which led them to identify the parents of several young girls with whom he had allegedly been in contact.
The investigation revealed that Staton had indeed breached the terms of the court order on multiple occasions.
He subsequently admitted to four counts of violating the sexual offences prevention order, which was designed to prevent him from having contact with minors.
During the court proceedings, Jennifer Coxon, representing the defendant, argued that Staton’s actions were driven by naivety rather than malicious intent.
She explained that he had not been left alone with the young girls nor had he supervised them directly.
Instead, she claimed that the contact occurred during social interactions with adults he knew, and that he had not deliberately sought to breach the order.
Coxon also stated that her client had not fully disclosed all details to the police, which she attributed to a lack of understanding rather than an attempt to deceive.
Judge Howard Crowson, presiding over the case at Teesside Crown Court, emphasized the importance of the order in safeguarding children from potential harm.
While acknowledging that the actual risk in this particular case was relatively minimal, the judge made it clear that breaching such orders is a serious matter.
He underscored that future violations would be met with even harsher penalties, reflecting the court’s stance on protecting vulnerable minors from individuals like Staton.
Ultimately, the judge sentenced Paul Staton to ten months in prison, reinforcing the message that breaches of court-imposed restrictions will not be tolerated and that the safety of children remains a top priority for the justice system in Middlesbrough and the wider Teesside area.
