WAKEFIELD PHOTOGRAPHER PAUL STAFFORD SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In March 2003, a disturbing case unfolded in Wakefield involving a professional photographer named Paul Stafford, who was ultimately sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offences against a teenage girl. The court proceedings revealed a troubling pattern of exploitation and misconduct that spanned over a week in January of the previous year.

Stafford, aged 52 and a father of four, resided at Speak Close, Eastmoor, Wakefield. He was found guilty by a jury on multiple charges, including one count of taking indecent photographs of a minor and two counts of indecent assault on a 13-year-old girl. Notably, he was acquitted of a fourth charge related to indecency with a child. The court heard that Stafford had initially gained the trust of the girl’s mother, who had two daughters, one of whom had shown an interest in modelling. This trust was manipulated by Stafford, who used it as a gateway to commit his offences.

Prosecutor Sharon Beattie described how the situation escalated from inappropriate conduct to more explicit acts. She explained that the offences occurred during a week in January when the girl’s mother was not present, raising questions about Stafford’s intentions. It was suggested that Stafford may have intended to use the photographs for a website, with titles such as ‘homework horrors,’ although this was not definitively proven.

During police interrogation, Stafford claimed that the girl was lying and insisted that the only photographs he took of her were “artistic” in nature. However, he did not deny taking the photographs but admitted, with some regret, that “with hindsight it was not the most appropriate thing to have done.” Despite his denial of exploiting the girl, the evidence presented in court painted a different picture.

Judge James Spencer QC, addressing Stafford during sentencing, emphasized the gravity of the offences. He stated, “You have been convicted of very serious offences. I am quite satisfied that when you were approached by the mother of these girls, you set about a course of grooming, exploitation, and abuse.” The judge further explained that Stafford saw an opportunity within the family to satisfy his own greed and lust, and once he had gained their confidence, he was “quite ready and eager” to abuse that trust.

The court heard that the girl was initially enthusiastic about modelling, but Stafford’s manipulation pushed the boundaries of her comfort and trust to dangerous limits. The judge also highlighted that Stafford’s misconduct extended beyond the initial photographs, as he indecently assaulted the girl, actions driven by financial motives aimed at selling the images.

As a result of his convictions, Stafford’s name will be permanently added to the sex offenders’ register. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of exploitation and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from predatory individuals in the Wakefield area.
