PAUL MAIDEN SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR SHOCKING RAPE IN HARTLEPOOL
The woman who endured a terrifying and traumatic ordeal at the hands of Paul Maiden is now looking toward the future with a sense of hope, as he begins a lengthy prison sentence. The disturbing incident occurred in Hartlepool, where Maiden, 33 years old, violently attacked a woman under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, an attack that left her physically and emotionally devastated.
According to details presented in Teesside Crown Court, the victim endured what she described as "pure hell" when Maiden forcibly engaged in sexual acts with her while she was asleep beside her boyfriend.
The courtroom was told that she only realized the nature of the assault after she awoke to find Maiden still sexually assaulting her.
The court heard the woman initially believed her boyfriend was still asleep next to her, but soon recognized Maiden's presence and the assault.
Judge Deborah Sherwin remarked during the proceedings, "Initially she thought it was her boyfriend then realised that he was asleep next to her and realised it was you." The court described the scene as involving a struggle, with the woman suffering bruises as a result of the attack.
It remains unclear exactly how the injuries occurred, but the evidence indicated that she was left physically harmed.
The attack was so severe that she exhibited signs of trauma afterward.
Her boyfriend was awakened by her shouting for help and was forced to chase Maiden away from the scene.
In the aftermath, Maiden sustained a cut to his hand from a knife, which was a significant part of the evidence presented.
The woman's partner testified that he felt compelled to defend himself and his partner from Maiden during the incident.
The woman, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, delivered a heartfelt statement during the court proceedings, describing her experience as going through "pure hell" and highlighting the profound impact the assault had on her life.
Prosecutor Paul Newcombe emphasized the woman's struggles, stating that she had lost her self-esteem and was suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder as a direct result of the attack.
Despite these hardships, the woman is now trying to look ahead with optimism and resilience.
Judge Sherwin emphasized the vulnerability of the victim at the time of the assault, noting that she was sleeping when attacked.
The court also revealed that she was found to be intoxicated at the time, with her blood alcohol concentration measured at four times the legal limit for driving, further illustrating her fragile state during the incident.
The judge commented, "It's had a profound effect on her life," and acknowledged that the victim's statement included efforts to cope with the trauma, even mentioning her attempt to take her own life.
Maiden, who hailed from Hartlepool Marina, denied the charge of rape but was convicted by a jury after a trial held the previous week.
Prior to this incident, Maiden had no previous convictions related to sexual offences and had maintained a clean record since a drink-driving offence in 2010.
His defense lawyer, Robin Denny, highlighted that Maiden had no relevant criminal history and suggested that the incident was exacerbated by his excessive levels of alcohol consumption.
Denny stated, "No relevant convictions.
He's never been sent away.
An incident which would never have happened if there hadn't been a background of quite excessive levels of drinking." In delivering the sentence, Judge Sherwin acknowledged the psychological harm suffered by the victim but also noted Maiden's lack of prior criminal activity.
Maiden was sentenced to an overall term of eight years behind bars.
Furthermore, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits him from contacting the victim directly.
Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, underscoring the severity of his crime and the long-term restrictions placed upon him.
