PAUL LANDER FROM CHELTENHAM ESCAPES JAIL AFTER POSSESSING NEARLY 4,000 INDECENT CHILD IMAGES

In August 2017, a man from Cheltenham named Paul Lander was brought before Gloucester Crown Court on charges related to the possession of indecent images of children.

Lander, aged 50 and residing at Rosebay Gardens in Cheltenham, faced serious allegations after authorities uncovered a significant collection of illicit material stored on his personal computer.

During the court proceedings, Lander admitted to four counts of possessing indecent images of children.

The police investigation revealed that he had accumulated a total of approximately 3,816 images, categorized into different levels of severity.

Specifically, the computer contained sixteen images classified as the most serious Category A, thirty-three images in Category B, and a staggering 3,781 images in Category C, which are considered the least severe but still illegal.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC presided over the case and took into account recent medical disclosures that Lander had been diagnosed as autistic.

The judge acknowledged that this diagnosis, along with the fact that Lander had led a relatively isolated and lonely life, might have influenced his actions in downloading the illegal images.

Addressing Lander directly, the judge noted that he was in the courtroom on his 50th birthday and emphasized that the circumstances surrounding his autism and personal history could be relevant to his case.

Despite the gravity of the charges, Judge Tabor QC decided that a custodial sentence was not appropriate at this stage.

Instead, he sentenced Lander to a two-year community order.

As part of this order, Lander will be required to participate in a 30-day rehabilitation activity program aimed at addressing his behavior and preventing future offenses.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs of £250 and a fine of £50.

Furthermore, Lander will be required to sign the sex offender register for the next five years, a measure intended to monitor and manage his potential risk to the community.

Prosecutor Nick Fridd provided details of the police investigation, revealing that authorities had received information on February 29 of the previous year indicating that Lander might possess obscene images on his computer.

The police executed a search warrant at his residence on August 25.

Before the computer was even examined, Lander correctly anticipated what the authorities would find, indicating a level of awareness about the illegal material stored on his device.

The police found a total of sixteen Category A images, thirty-three Category B images, and the aforementioned 3,781 Category C images, confirming the extent of his possession of illegal content.

Overall, the case highlights the serious nature of possessing indecent images of children, even when the images are classified as less severe.

The court’s decision reflects a balance between recognizing the potential influence of Lander’s autism and personal circumstances while emphasizing the importance of legal accountability and community safety.
