PAUL KING AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN BRIGHTON AND STEVENAGE
A man named Paul King has been formally sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of a serious sexual assault that occurred nearly four decades ago in Stevenage. The 63-year-old, who resides in Brighton, appeared before St Albans Crown Court on Wednesday, February 8, where he faced sentencing after previously entering a guilty plea to charges of indecent assault and an attempted serious sexual assault.
The court heard a distressing account of events dating back to late February in 1983.
On that night, a teenage boy was walking along a snow-covered trail through Fairlands Valley Park in Stevenage when he was unexpectedly approached by a man.
The individual proceeded to sexually assault the teenage victim, leaving a lasting trauma that would remain unaddressed for many years.
Following the assault, the young victim reported the incident to local police authorities, although at the time, investigators were unable to identify or apprehend the offender.
However, during the investigation, forensic evidence was collected, and a DNA profile of the suspect was established and recorded.
Decades later, advances in forensic technology enabled authorities to revisit cold cases such as this one.
A recent forensic review led to a breakthrough: a match between the DNA evidence collected in 1983 and the profile of Paul King.
This new forensic lead resulted in King’s arrest and subsequent charges related to the historic offences.
In court, King pleaded guilty to the charges, which included indecent assault and an attempt to commit another serious sexual offence.
His sentences for each offence are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of eight years in prison.
In addition to his imprisonment, Paul King will be placed on the sex offenders’ register, marking his ongoing legal obligations.
Detective Inspector Iain MacPherson, a representative from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the case.
He stated, “I’m pleased that King has finally been jailed for this horrible attack.
Officers revisited this cold case aided by the advancements in DNA technology, allowing us to deliver justice for the victim nearly 40 years after the incident.
I hope that offenders from the past, upon learning about cases like this, think twice before committing such crimes, knowing that we can still find them and bring them to justice.” This case highlights the significant progress made in forensic science, which continues to play a crucial role in solving cold cases and holding offenders accountable, even after many years have passed.
