A man named Paul John Alexander, age 38, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates' Court today and faced charges of raping a disabled young woman 12 years prior, in December 1994 in Harborne.

His arrest was made possible through advanced DNA technology as part of Operation Advance, a Home Office initiative targeting historical sexual offenses.

Alexander was arrested the previous day and did not enter a plea during the hearing.

Bail was denied, and he was remanded into custody.

The case has been scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on March 7, 2007.

Operation Advance has successfully secured over 20 convictions with sentences totaling more than 100 years, including three life sentences.

The use of high-tech forensic evidence has led to convictions of other high-profile criminals in the Midlands, such as Paul Blackwood, convicted of attempting to rape a 101-year-old woman, and Colin Waite, convicted of the murder of Nicola Dixon, whose DNA evidence indicated an overwhelming likelihood of his involvement.

Other cases include John Cook, linked to a woman’s murder via DNA from evidence collected from her, and Michael Chidgey, imprisoned for life after volunteering a DNA sample that connected him to a crime scene.

This DNA database effort was praised by Prime Minister Tony Blair for solving longstanding 'cold cases'.

Overall, the Midland police's forensic work has contributed to the justice of multiple serious crimes.

The article details the background of the investigation, the importance of DNA evidence in solving these cases, and emphasizes the ongoing impact of forensic science in criminal justice within the region.
