PAUL FERRIS FROM WELLINGTON AND WHITEHAVEN SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Paul Ferris, aged 50, who previously worked as a residential care worker, has been handed a community order after being found in possession of hundreds of indecent images of children. The investigation revealed that Ferris possessed not only numerous images but also hundreds of videos, some of which depicted younger victims. These illicit materials were collected over a span of more than a decade, highlighting a prolonged period of offending.

During the court proceedings, Ferris admitted to police that he had used pornography during a particularly difficult time in his life, specifically while his partner was suffering from a terminal illness. This revelation was part of his testimony, but it did little to mitigate the severity of his actions in the eyes of the court.

As a result of his crimes, Ferris has been permanently barred from working with children, a restriction that aims to protect vulnerable minors from potential harm. Additionally, he is subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which imposes strict conditions on his behavior and movements to prevent further offending.

The court also noted with concern Ferris's apparent lack of remorse and the manipulative tone of his statements during the proceedings. These factors contributed to the decision to impose a community order rather than a custodial sentence, but the seriousness of his offenses was clearly recognized by the judiciary.
