PAUL EVANS AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL OFFENSES IN MIDDLESBROUGH
A man from Middlesbrough, Paul Evans, has been convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl, including exposing himself while she was in the bath. The case has drawn significant attention due to the disturbing nature of his actions and the grooming process he engaged in.
According to court proceedings, Evans, a father of one, attempted to justify his inappropriate behavior by telling the girl’s mother that there was "nothing wrong with being friends" with a child.
The allegations reveal that Evans used a mobile application to initiate contact with the girl in December 2021, during which he began to manipulate her emotionally and sexually.
The court heard that Evans and the girl maintained regular communication through WhatsApp, with daily calls and messages that often took place late into the night, between 7 pm and 4 am.
The young girl, who was a teenager at the time, disclosed to him early on that she was underage.
During their first video call, she was even dressed in a school uniform, indicating her teenage status.
Prosecutor Rachel Butt outlined the disturbing details of the grooming process.
She explained that Evans initially appeared to be kind and complimentary, often telling the girl she was beautiful and amazing.
During their first video interaction, he told her, "if you keep speaking to me you'll get money," which was an early indication of his manipulative tactics.
As weeks passed, Evans’s behavior grew more invasive.
He began requesting explicit images of the girl’s cleavage and private parts.
The girl felt pressured by his repeated requests and emotional appeals, such as claiming he was having a bad day and implying that she did not care about him.
Despite her discomfort, she sent multiple images over time, and during some video calls, Evans would remove his top.
Court evidence revealed that on one occasion, he was in the bath and exposed his erect penis to her.
The situation escalated until February 2022, when the girl’s mother grew suspicious after noticing a message from her daughter asking Evans for money.
The mother recalled that her daughter had been hinting at entering competitions to win cash, which was likely a cover story to hide the true source of the funds if Evans had sent her money.
Concerned, the mother questioned her daughter, who denied sending any pictures.
Subsequently, the mother contacted Evans directly, asking for an explanation.
He claimed he was simply talking to her and ended the call.
The following day, she called him again, warning that she would involve the police.
Evans responded by saying, "there was nothing wrong with being friends with a teenager." In an attempt to prevent further contact, the mother destroyed her daughter’s SIM card.
However, the matter was not reported immediately; it was only after social services raised concerns that police became involved.
Evans was arrested in June 2022.
Investigations into his phone revealed numerous video calls with the victim, along with images of her in her school uniform and one showing her cleavage.
The evidence painted a clear picture of his ongoing inappropriate contact.
The victim, in a heartfelt statement read in court, described the profound impact Evans’s actions had on her.
She said, "The case with Paul has had a huge impact on me and my family.
Firstly it really hurt my relationship with my mum.
After she found out what happened she didn't trust me and it's taken a long time to try and repair our relationship." She also revealed the emotional toll, stating, "Paul's actions and the hurt he caused me resulted in my being hospitalized after I tried to kill myself.
My parents felt unable to keep me safe, and I was placed in care for four months.
While this was meant to protect me, it removed me from my family and I wasn't able to see my sister, which really upset me." The court heard that Evans has an extensive criminal record, with 16 convictions spanning 75 offenses.
He pleaded guilty to charges including causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, causing a child to view a sexual act, and engaging in sexual communications with a minor.
In mitigation, defense barrister Kelleigh Lodge stated that Evans had used his time in custody constructively and expressed remorse.
She emphasized, "He is genuinely sorry for his behavior and the impact it has had on the victim and her family." Lodge added that Evans had been working with the DART team to address issues related to alcohol and mental health.
He was also participating in the Horizon program for medium-risk sex offenders, which aims to rehabilitate offenders and prevent reoffending.
Previously, Evans, who resided on Forest Drive, Ormesby, was serving a separate sentence of two years and six months after he performed a disturbing dance involving exposing himself to two 15-year-old girls via webcam.
Reports indicated that he promised the girls large sums of money if they showed him their bodies and offered more money for them to touch each other, but they refused.
This incident was also part of the evidence that led to his current conviction.
The court ultimately sentenced Evans to an additional 32 months in prison, to be served consecutively.
His criminal activities and ongoing behavior highlight the serious nature of his offenses and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from such predatory conduct.
