PAUL BURFORD FROM PLYMOUTH AND DARLINGTON JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING TEENAGE STUDENT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Darlington and Plymouth, Paul Burford, a 38-year-old science teacher, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for engaging in a prolonged sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student. The offences spanned over two years and included multiple instances of sexual activity, some of which took place in public settings and at his private residences.
Burford, who was married and a father of one, had taken the girl to various concerts, including performances by bands such as Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore.
During these outings, he would often park in lay-bys and service stations, where the pair engaged in sexual acts.
The girl, dressed in her school uniform, was reportedly involved in sexual encounters with Burford in the street on West Auckland Road in Darlington, as well as at his homes located in Darlington and Sadberge, both in County Durham.
These activities occurred while his wife was away visiting her parents in Carlisle, highlighting the secretive and illicit nature of their relationship.
According to court reports, Burford's misconduct was not limited to physical encounters.
He also provided the girl with sex toys and bought matching rings as tokens of their relationship.
The girl finally reported the abuse to police in May 2012, after which Burford was arrested.
At the time of his arrest, he was serving as an assistant head at a school in Devon.
The investigation revealed that Burford had initially denied the allegations, claiming he was merely teaching the girl guitar, a claim he maintained even after being interrogated by Child Protection officers.
Despite this, the evidence proved the sexual relationship persisted for over a year after the initial questioning.
It was also revealed that the sexual misconduct began when Burford, then a teacher at Branksome School in Darlington, kissed the girl in a classroom when they were alone.
The court heard that the relationship started around 2010, with sexual encounters taking place at his homes and in his car.
The girl, who was 14 at the time, eventually decided to come forward after having a child, which prompted her to disclose her past experiences.
Her decision was supported by a colleague who advised her to report the matter to authorities.
Burford’s personal life was also discussed during the proceedings.
He is now separated from his wife, who was pregnant at the time of the offences, and they have an eight-year-old daughter.
It was disclosed that Burford confided in his father about the affair on his deathbed, a revelation made by his defense lawyer, Amrit Jandoo.
The lawyer expressed remorse on Burford’s behalf, stating that he apologizes to the victim, the school, and his family, acknowledging the devastating impact his actions have had on all involved.
Judge Tony Briggs addressed Burford directly during sentencing, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
He stated, “It is perfectly obvious that custody is inevitable and it has to be for a man of your age and background a significant sentence.” In addition to his prison term, Burford was placed on the sex offenders’ register and was issued an indefinite Sexual Offence’s Prevention Order, which prohibits him from having any contact with underage girls.
His case underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability in safeguarding vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse, especially by individuals in positions of trust and authority.
