PAUL BOOTH LEEDS SEX OFFENDER CONFRONTED BY VICTIM AFTER NEARLY 50 YEARS

In a landmark case that spanned nearly five decades, a woman who endured horrific sexual abuse as a child finally confronted her attacker in court, bringing long-awaited justice to her life.

Paul Booth, a man from Leeds, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple sex offences committed against two young girls during the 1970s.

Booth, now aged 59, began his pattern of abuse when he was just 11 years old, and his predatory behavior persisted into the victims' early adulthood.

The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which left deep psychological scars on the victims.

One of the women, now in her fifties, chose to deliver a powerful statement during the proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, describing the lifelong suffering she has endured as a result of Booth’s actions.

In her emotional testimony, she expressed feelings of worthlessness and despair, stating, “I feel worthless and I often feel like what is the point in carrying on with my life as my past overtakes any thoughts for the future.” She revealed that the trauma led her to self-harm and to seek solace in alcohol, which she used as a means to numb the pain.

Despite her ongoing struggles with depression, panic attacks, anxiety, and sleepless nights, she expressed hope for a brighter future now that Booth has been held accountable.

“I only started living once I reported this to the police – it was such a relief that the police listened to me,” she said.

The victim also shared her difficulties in mustering the courage to testify in court, especially after Booth chose to contest the case and take it to trial.

She lamented, “I always hoped (Booth) would hold his hands up to what he has done rather than drag me through a lengthy court case.” Paul Booth, who resides on Norton Way in Morley, Leeds, was convicted on multiple counts.

He was found guilty of five counts of indecent assault and two counts of rape concerning the first victim.

Additionally, he was convicted of three counts of indecent assault, one count of indecency with a child, and one count of attempted rape related to the second female victim.

The court established that the attempted rape occurred during the 1980s.

During the hearing, Louise Blackwell, representing Booth, argued that he was a child when the abuse began and emphasized that he has since changed significantly.

She noted that his second wife continues to support him despite his criminal convictions, and both his daughter and step-daughter believe he does not pose a risk to children.

Blackwell described Booth as someone who has lived a life of integrity, hard work, and has been an example to others, asserting, “He has lived the best life he could have and has been a man full of integrity and hard work.” Booth appeared in court via a video link from Leeds prison, visibly emotional and crying during the proceedings.

Judge Rodney Jameson, QC, addressed the court, highlighting the profound and lifelong psychological damage caused by Booth’s actions.

The judge stated, “The affect upon them has been profound and lifelong,” underscoring the severity of the crimes and their lasting impact on the victims.
