March 2006 CHILD-RAPE PERVERT JAILED FOR 18 YEARS A child rapist who subjected his victims to a horrifying catalogue of abuse has been jailed for 18 years. Paul Bevan, 54, had denied all the allegations against him, forcing his victims to give evidence against him in court. He was found guilty of rape, cruelty and actual bodily harm by a jury of six men and six women who took two days to deliberate their verdicts. The court heard that Bevan, Richmond Crescent, Roath, Cardiff, told police his traumatised accusers were making the allegations up. But during his two-week trial the jury heard he abused his victims with objects as well as urinating on one of them. Bevan also told one victim how the sex assaults were a secret and she would be punished if she revealed what had happened. She also recalled being ‘encouraged’ with sweets. Yesterday Judge Christopher Vosper QC said, in one case, while a group of children were playing, Bevan invented a game for them which would involve the others leaving one little girl alone with him, in fields. ‘You raped her and she was too frightened to say anything about what happened,’ he said. Ieuan Bennett, prosecuting, said one victim did try to make a complaint a decade ago but there was never a prosecution. She went to the police again in 2004 after others made similar allegations against him. Bevan will be on the sex offenders’ register and banned from working with children for the rest of his life. He has a previous conviction for having unlawful sex with a girl of 15.
