PAUL ANDREWS FROM IPSWICH CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENSES DATING BACK 60 YEARS

In a landmark case that has etched itself into the legal history of Suffolk, a 76-year-old man from Ipswich, Paul Andrews, has been convicted of multiple child sex offences that span an astonishing six-decade period.

The conviction was handed down at Chelmsford Crown Court, marking a significant moment in the fight against historic sexual abuse cases.

Paul Andrews, who resides on Hawthorn Drive in Ipswich, faced a jury after a lengthy trial that revealed disturbing details of his alleged crimes.

The court found him guilty of five counts of rape, seven counts of indecent assault, and two additional sex-related assaults.

These offences were committed against four victims, all of whom were minors aged between six and 12 at the time of the incidents.

Three of the indecent assaults reportedly took place between 1957 and 1962, highlighting the long duration over which these alleged abuses occurred.

The most recent allegations date from 2011, indicating that Andrews' alleged offending spanned over five decades.

This extensive timeline is believed to be the longest period between the commission of a sexual offence and a conviction in Suffolk’s legal history, and it ranks among the longest in the entire country.

The case initially was set to be tried at Ipswich Crown Court; however, due to accessibility issues related to Andrews’ status as a wheelchair user, the trial was relocated to Chelmsford Crown Court to ensure proper accommodations.

The decision underscored the importance of ensuring justice is accessible to all, regardless of physical limitations.

Prosecutor Christopher Wing outlined the progression of the case during the trial.

He explained that the first victim came forward in August of the previous year, revealing that she had been abused by Andrews.

Her courage to speak out was reportedly inspired by confiding in a friend, which ultimately led her to report the abuse to the police.

Following her disclosure, three additional victims also came forward with allegations against Andrews.

The police responded swiftly, arresting him in November.

During police interviews, one victim recounted her experience, stating, “I didn’t know what to do, I just froze.

I was too young to know what was going on.” The court heard that these testimonies formed the basis of the charges, which the prosecution aimed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

Andrews maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, denying all allegations.

In police interviews, he claimed that the historic accusations were “completely untrue.” Prior to his trial, Andrews was held in custody at Norwich Prison.

The case echoes the historic nature of UK legal proceedings, with the oldest known case being that of Reginald Davies, who was convicted at Kingston Crown Court in October 2012 for sexual assaults committed between 1949 and 1973.

Andrews’ conviction adds to the ongoing efforts to bring justice for victims of historic abuse, regardless of how much time has passed since the offences occurred.
