PATRICK KELLY'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN BOLTON SPANNING 30 YEARS: FROM FINE TO JAIL
In a disturbing case that highlights a troubling pattern of unchecked predatory behavior, Patrick Kelly, a man from Bolton, has been brought to justice after decades of committing heinous crimes against children.The story begins in April 1984, when Kelly, then a young man, was caught in the act of indecently touching a young girl at a swimming pool.
At that time, the authorities decided to impose a relatively lenient punishment, opting for a fine rather than a custodial sentence, despite the severity of the offense.
Fast forward more than 30 years, and Kelly's dark history resurfaced in a court of law.
Now aged 65, Kelly faced charges of multiple sexual assaults against a child under the age of 13.
The court proceedings revealed that Kelly had committed these acts on three separate occasions, during which he inappropriately touched the young girl beneath her clothing for extended periods, sometimes lasting as long as 40 minutes.
The court heard how Kelly had manipulated circumstances to gain access to the child's body, setting up scenarios that allowed him to carry out his sickening acts.
The victim's family was present in the courtroom, visibly distressed as Kelly appeared before Bolton Crown Court.
The court was told that when the victim confided in her family about the abuse, Kelly had initially denied any sexual intent, claiming that any contact was accidental and not motivated by sexual desire.
Despite his claims, Kelly ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges.
Prosecutor Daniel Calder read a heartfelt statement from the victim’s mother, describing the profound and lasting impact of Kelly’s actions.

The mother described her child's emotional turmoil, noting that the child now exhibits behaviors and emotional responses that are markedly different from before the abuse.
The family expressed their deep fear about the long-term effects and their desire to forget the traumatic events, but acknowledged the scars that remain.
Judge Timothy Stead, presiding over the case, acknowledged Kelly’s health issues but emphasized that justice must be served.
He sentenced Kelly to three years in prison, making it clear that Kelly’s claims of no sexual interest in children were untenable given the evidence.
The judge also reflected on the different societal attitudes of the 1980s, suggesting that Kelly’s previous punishment—a fine—would likely be insufficient if the crimes had occurred today.
In addition to his prison sentence, Kelly was subjected to a restraining order, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and will be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
