PARVAZE AHMED'S BRADFORD PRISON FACEBOOK ACCOUNT SHUT DOWN AFTER POST UPDATE

In March 2019, Parvaze Ahmed, a Bradford man previously jailed for 17 years for rape, had his Facebook account closed after it was recently updated. Ahmed, 36, of Farcliffe Road, was convicted of three counts of rape following a lengthy trial at Bradford Crown Court, during which seven other men faced charges of grooming and sexually exploiting two vulnerable girls.

His social media profile, under the name ‘Jimmy Khan,’ was believed to have been updated on a Tuesday, showing a shared photograph from September of the previous year. The image depicted Ahmed with another man, accompanied by the caption, “Brotherhood. NO JUSTICE NO PEACE.” The post quickly gained attention, with friends of Ahmed liking and loving it; one even commented that he was ‘looking good.’

Concerned members of the public alerted The Telegraph & Argus about the post, prompting us to contact the Ministry of Justice. A resident expressed concern, saying, “It’s not right he has a phone. His account should not be active to post anything after his crime.”

A Prison Service spokesperson stated, “We do not tolerate the use of mobile phones in prisons and the account has been removed from Facebook at our request. Anyone found with a mobile phone faces extra time behind bars, and we are spending £2 million to detect and block their use.”

The incident has shocked MPs in Bradford. Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West, said, “If he has access to his Facebook in prison and is able to contribute to social media, it’s pretty bad. Prison is a punishment and this doesn’t look like a punishment to me. If it’s him updating from his prison cell then that really does smack in the face of justice and makes a mockery of the system. It doesn’t send out a good message. It’s pretty despicable.”

Philip Davies, MP for Shipley and a frequent critic of the criminal justice system, commented, “It would be disappointing for Ahmed’s victims to see. It’s completely unacceptable and only reinforces the perception that the prison system is too lax and out of control. It’s a kick in the teeth for the victims. While prisoners can be resourceful in smuggling in contraband, the current situation is unacceptable. Kudos to the Telegraph & Argus for following up and getting the account shut down, but this should be managed by the prison service itself. These individuals are vile, and prison is the place for them. Prison should serve as a punishment, and this kind of activity undermines that belief.”

This is not the first incident involving Bradford inmates using mobile phones in prison. In October 2018, social media photos revealed Bradford offenders posing in their cells while incarcerated at the privately run HMP Doncaster. One selfie received 30 likes, with a comment saying “hope you boys are well,” to which a reply was “kickin back my son.” Another group photo, found on a Facebook page, garnered 86 ‘likes’ and included comments like “The lads are back together again,” and questions such as “How have you not been caught with that phone yet?”

Earlier in 2018, pictures showed three Bradford men taking a selfie wearing Community Payback vests and holding cans of Carling lager, captioned “Might as well have a few on unpaid work.” These incidents highlight ongoing issues with mobile phone use among inmates and raise concerns about prison discipline and effectiveness.
