BIRMINGHAM MAN PANAYIOTIS YIANNAKOU SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES AFTER PREDATORY BEHAVIOR IN BARNSEY AND SHEFFIELD
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, 38-year-old Panayiotis Yiannakou, a resident of Birmingham, was sentenced to prison after engaging in a disturbing pattern of online predatory behavior aimed at a decoy account set up by police. The incident unfolded in July 2019, when Yiannakou attempted to establish a meeting with what he believed was a 12-year-old girl at a Subway restaurant in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
According to court proceedings, Yiannakou initiated contact with the decoy account on June 5 of that year.
The police had set up this account to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.
Prosecutor Nicola Quinney explained that Yiannakou was made aware that the account was operated by law enforcement and that the supposed girl was only 12 years old.
Despite this knowledge, he continued to send increasingly explicit messages, revealing a disturbing pattern of sexual interest.
Ms.
Quinney detailed that Yiannakou began by exchanging messages with the decoy, commenting on the girl’s age and making inappropriate remarks.
He then escalated his communication by sending explicit images of himself, expressing preferences about body hair, and asking whether she had ever kissed anyone and if she enjoyed it.
The messages grew more sexual in nature the following day, with Yiannakou discussing oral sex and instructing the decoy to search for terms like “69ing.” He also sent her pornography, further demonstrating his intent to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
Authorities revealed that plans were made for Yiannakou to meet the girl at a Subway branch in Barnsley.
However, before he could carry out this meeting, police intervened and arrested him at the scene.
The investigation uncovered that Yiannakou had no prior convictions but was charged with multiple serious offenses, including attempting to communicate sexually with a child, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, attempting to cause a child under 13 to view sexual images, and attempting to meet a child for sexual grooming.
During the court hearing, Yiannakou pleaded guilty to all charges.
His defense, represented by Katy Rafter, emphasized his cooperation with law enforcement, noting that he provided passwords to his electronic devices and allowed police to search his home.
Rafter also highlighted that Yiannakou was struggling to come to terms with his actions and expressed remorse, citing a previously prestigious and well-paid career that he has now lost.
Judge Sarah Wright sentenced Yiannakou to 16 months in prison.
Additionally, she ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and imposed a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.
The judge remarked that although Yiannakou expressed a desire to change and address his offending behavior, the severity of his crimes warranted an immediate custodial sentence, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the potential harm caused.
