DARLINGTON MAN WALKS FREE AFTER PUNCHING WOMAN AND SPITTING AT POLICE OFFICER
A man named Owen Suckling, aged 39, from Ajax Street, Darlington, has been involved in an incident where he violently assaulted a woman and a police officer.
The court hearing revealed that he punched a woman in the face and then spat at a police officer during the course of the incident.
This violent behavior was captured on video footage after Suckling refused to leave the woman’s home on December 11 of the previous year.
During the hearing, it was noted that Suckling was struggling with his mental health while on remand.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and two charges of assaulting an emergency worker.
The Judge, Paul Watson KC, sentenced him to eight months in custody but decided to suspend the sentence for 12 months, warning that any further offences within this period would activate the custodial sentence.
The judge described the assault as "really appalling" and expressed disgust at the spitting incident, emphasizing that spitting in an officer’s face is "the most disgusting thing" someone can do.
The court proceedings highlighted Suckling’s violence and mental health struggles, ultimately resulting in a sentence of conditional freedom.
