OWEN REID GUILTY OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN BIRMINGHAM CHURCH SCANDAL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Birmingham community, Owen Reid, a church youth leader, was convicted of sexually abusing two young boys under his care. The incidents took place during the late 20th century, specifically in the 1970s, when Reid was actively involved in religious activities across the city.
Reid, who was 48 years old at the time of sentencing, was formerly residing on Albion Road in Sparkbrook.
His position within the church community allowed him to gain the trust of vulnerable children, whom he then exploited for his own illicit purposes.
The court heard that Reid had manipulated the boys while they were out spreading the gospel, a task that was part of his duties as a youth leader in the church.
The Birmingham Crown Court was told that Reid’s actions spanned over two decades ago, yet the impact on the victims was profound and long-lasting.
Despite the significant passage of time, the court recognized the seriousness of the offenses.
Judge Peter Crawford QC delivered a sentence of eight months in prison, emphasizing that Reid had played with his victims “like toys” from a position of authority and trust.
Prosecutor Miss Rachel Brand outlined that Reid, who considered himself a devout Christian, was deeply involved with the New Testament Church of God, located in Highgate.
The church community was shocked to learn of Reid’s misconduct, which tarnished the reputation of an organization that was supposed to be a place of moral guidance and spiritual support.
Reid admitted to four charges of indecent assault related to the two boys, acknowledging the allegations against him.
The court’s decision reflected the gravity of his actions, which exploited the innocence of young children and betrayed the trust placed in him by the church and the community at large.
