A trainee doctor convicted of making indecent images of children has been permanently barred from practising medicine.

Oliver Smith, from Bradford, pleaded guilty to two charges relating to nine images in October 2024, for which he was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court to a community order.

A Medical Practitioners Tribunal this month was told Smith had brought the profession into disrepute.

It was said Smith, who graduated from the University of Southampton in 2022 - the same year as his offences took place - had expressed remorse and apologised for his actions.

The tribunal was told the former doctor, who did not attend the hearing, had "no intention" of returning to work and wanted to be voluntarily erased from the medical register.

It was said his two convictions related to a combination of six Category A images - the most serious kind - and three Category C images.

His offences came to light when the online application Discord contacted police to inform them an indecent image had been uploaded to the platform, hearing documents said.

Smith was arrested in April 2023 and later informed the General Medical Council that he had resigned from the trust where he was employed.

The tribunal concluded that Smith posed a "risk to the public and that erasure was in the public interest".
