NORMAN LOWE OF MIDDLESBROUGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE AND ABUSE AT TEESSIDE CROWN COURT
In November 2016, the community of Middlesbrough was shaken by the conviction of Norman Lowe, a man accused of heinous crimes against a young girl.The victim, who was just a teenager at the time of the abuse, endured a series of traumatic assaults that have left lasting scars both physically and emotionally.
Norman Lowe, a resident of Middlesbrough, denied any physical contact with his young victim during the initial trial, attempting to dismiss the allegations and avoid accountability.
However, the courage of the victim, who came forward after many years of silence, proved pivotal in securing justice.
Over two decades after the abuse took place, her detailed testimony was instrumental in the court proceedings that ultimately led to Lowe’s conviction.
During the trial, witnesses described Lowe as a deeply disturbing individual with a history of violent and manipulative behavior.
One witness, speaking on behalf of the victim, recounted how Lowe’s actions extended beyond the initial assault.
They described how he would make the young girl a cup of tea after raping her and then instruct her to “forget about it,” a chilling attempt at psychological manipulation.
The witness added, “He was just horrible,” emphasizing Lowe’s reputation for cruelty and intimidation, which made him a figure of fear and discomfort among those who knew him.
The abuse inflicted on the girl was particularly brutal.
Lowe, who was in his early fifties at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of raping her six times.
The jury at Teesside Crown Court also determined that he committed three additional indecent assaults on the same girl.
These acts of violence and exploitation have left a profound impact on her, with her trust issues and emotional scars still evident today.
The witness noted, “She has a lot of trust issues as a result of what he did to her,” highlighting the long-lasting effects of Lowe’s cruelty.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was Lowe’s manipulation.
After the assaults, he would tell the girl not to tell her mother, make her a cup of tea, and urge her to calm down, all while maintaining a facade of normalcy.
The witness described Lowe as “a very manipulating person,” whose actions have “ruined her life really.” It was only after the victim found the strength to speak out that she contacted Cleveland Police.
An officer was assigned to her case from the outset, providing support and guidance throughout the investigation.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Lowe was first interviewed voluntarily on 24 May 2014.
Despite this, he was not arrested until after his 55th birthday, when he was brought before the court to face justice.
On October 21, Lowe, of Crowland Avenue in Middlesbrough, was sentenced to a term that could see him remain incarcerated until he reaches the age of 70.
The court’s decision reflects the severity of his crimes and the lasting damage inflicted upon his young victim, whose bravery in coming forward has finally brought her tormentor to justice.
