NOEL BARRETT FROM YORK SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN MIDDLESBROUGH, HULL, COUNTY KERRY, AND DUBLIN

In a case that has sent shockwaves through multiple communities, retired Catholic priest Noel Barrett, aged 62 and hailing from York, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for a series of indecent assaults on young boys. The offences, which spanned over a decade, took place in various locations including Middlesbrough, Hull, County Kerry, and Dublin, highlighting the extensive reach of his misconduct.

During proceedings at Teesside Crown Court, it was revealed that Barrett had admitted to committing 15 charges of indecent assault. Additionally, he requested that another 16 charges be taken into consideration, indicating a pattern of predatory behavior over the years. The court heard that Barrett’s criminal actions occurred between 1971 and 1983, a period during which he was serving as a priest in different communities.

Judge George Moorhouse sentenced Barrett to 45 months in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his betrayal of trust. In his remarks, the judge expressed disappointment and shame, stating, “You, as a parish priest, were in a position of trust. It enabled you to befriend the families, acquiring their friendship and trust, and you did so to your own advantage.” The judge’s words underscored the breach of moral and ethical responsibilities inherent in Barrett’s role as a spiritual leader.

The court was informed that the assaults took place in various settings, including the boys’ homes, Barrett’s car, and at a local swimming pool. Prosecutor Christine Egerton described the victims as being left deeply traumatized by the abuse, highlighting the lasting impact on their lives.

In mitigation, defense lawyer Mr. Andrew Semple argued that Barrett was no longer considered a threat to children. He noted that Barrett had sought psychological help in the 1980s, which included undergoing medication to manage his obsessive tendencies. Barrett, who retired from his priestly duties in 1997, was also ordered to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, reflecting the court’s recognition of the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing monitoring.
