NIRMAL ATHWAL SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN BEDFORD
In a case that has shocked the Bedford community, Nirmal Athwal, a 33-year-old man from London Road, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 11 years after being convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl. The incident, which took place in Bedford, was brought to light during a trial at Luton Crown Court, where a jury found Athwal guilty of assaulting a child under the age of 13 by penetration.During the sentencing hearing held on a Thursday, Athwal appeared before Judge Barbara Mensah, who emphasized the gravity of the offense. The judge stated, "The offence is so serious it carries the same sentence as rape." She pointed out that Athwal had denied the allegations and attempted to portray the young victim as a liar, despite the presence of compelling medical evidence that confirmed the abuse. The court heard that the victim was subjected to a traumatic experience, and the evidence presented was overwhelming.
Throughout the proceedings, Athwal’s legal representative, Warwick Aleeson, highlighted that his client had been a man of previously good character and that this incident was an isolated one. Aleeson also noted that since the conviction, Athwal had been ostracized by his community and friends in Bedford, and he had never previously served time in prison. Despite the conviction, Aleeson stated that Athwal continued to deny the offense.
Judge Mensah made it clear that the consequences for Athwal would be severe. She ordered that he must sign the Sex Offender Register for life and prohibited him from working with or being alone with children. The judge’s decision underscores the seriousness with which the court views offenses of this nature and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children in Bedford and beyond.
Throughout the case, the community and authorities have expressed their concern over the impact of such crimes, reaffirming their commitment to protecting children and ensuring that offenders are held accountable for their actions.
