NIGEL PERKINS FROM NORTHAMPTON SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR PREDATORY ACTS IN NORTHAMPTON AND CORNWALL

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Northampton community, Nigel Perkins, a 56-year-old man originally from Cornwall, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of disturbing indecent acts committed against young boys during the 1980s.

The sentencing took place at Northampton Crown Court, where Perkins pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency with a child under the age of 14.

Perkins' offenses spanned over a period of six years during his involvement with the Christian organization known as The Jesus Army, which is now called the Jesus Fellowship.

This organization was based in Northampton and had a widespread presence across Northamptonshire and neighboring counties.

During the 1980s, the organization encouraged its members—men, women, and families—to live communally in various houses, fostering close-knit relationships and community activities.

The court heard how Perkins, who was a member of this religious community, exploited the trust placed in him by his victims and their families.

His actions were described as opportunistic and predatory by His Honour Judge Smith, who emphasized the calculated nature of Perkins' misconduct.

The judge stated, “You moved from one young boy to another.

Some have called it opportunistic but I term it predatory.” During the proceedings, it was revealed that Perkins' abuse occurred during his time as a member of the church, which promoted communal living arrangements for young members.

These arrangements often involved young boys moving into dormitories with older members, with the intention of fostering Christian values and relationships.

The organization also organized social activities such as Sunday lunches and community walks, which provided opportunities for Perkins to gain access to vulnerable children.

One of Perkins’ victims, from Northamptonshire, recounted how he was alone with Perkins on a Sunday.

The court heard that Perkins stopped, pulled down his trousers, and began touching himself before sexually assaulting the boy for several minutes.

The child managed to run away afterward.

Perkins later told the victim that what had happened was “normal behavior” and instructed him not to tell anyone.

The impact on this boy was profound; he described feeling “dirty” and, as an adult, viewed the incident with a pragmatic attitude, believing “nothing really happened,” which underscored the lasting emotional scars.

Another victim, from Warwickshire, was targeted twice by Perkins.

The court detailed how the boy was left alone with Perkins while changing clothes, during which Perkins complimented his muscles and then touched him from his abdomen down to his thigh.

When the boy objected, Perkins reassured him, saying, “It’s alright, it’s me.” Subsequently, Perkins performed a sexual act on himself in front of the boy and then attempted to involve the child in touching him.

The boy refused, but Perkins persisted, causing the victim to feel manipulated and ashamed.

This incident significantly affected the boy’s confidence and caused long-term sexual confusion.

Perkins’ abuse extended to a third victim during a visit to a house in northern England.

He took the boy on a walk and, upon reaching an outbuilding, dared him to go inside and touch Perkins’ genitals.

When the boy refused, Perkins paid him 50p to carry out the act.

Later, Perkins again cornered this same boy and sexually assaulted him.

The court noted that the victim felt guilty and ashamed, believing he was responsible because he accepted money for the acts, despite Perkins being the actual perpetrator.

Following his last known offense, Perkins left the Jesus Army.

During subsequent investigations into abuse within the organization, Perkins initially denied any misconduct or abuse of children.

However, as part of Operation Lifeboat, conducted by Northamptonshire Police, Perkins was arrested at his cottage in Penzance, Cornwall.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to all five charges.

Judge Smith, in his sentencing remarks, acknowledged Perkins’ background, noting that he experienced complications growing up and was an introverted individual who might struggle in prison.

Despite this, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the crimes and the need for justice, sentencing Perkins to three years in prison.

Additionally, Perkins will be subject to a lifetime sex offenders register and notification requirements, which mandate him to inform authorities of any changes to his personal details.

DCI Ally White of Northamptonshire Police commented on the case, stating, “This court case forms part of Operation Lifeboat, the Northamptonshire Police investigation into non-recent allegations of abuse within the Jesus Fellowship.

This operation, which began in 2015, has been supported fully by the organization, and the convictions are a testament to the bravery of those who came forward.” White further praised the victims for their courage in supporting the investigation, despite the painful memories they had to revisit.

The case underscores that even decades-old offenses can be successfully prosecuted, providing some measure of justice for the victims and holding perpetrators accountable.
