NICHOLAS TOUGH CAUGHT GROOMING ONLINE IN ABERDEEN AND SHETLAND

A man accused of engaging in inappropriate online behavior to exploit a minor has narrowly avoided a prison sentence after admitting to serious charges related to sexual communication and grooming. Nicholas Tough, aged 44 and residing in Aberdeen, appeared before the Sheriff Court to face allegations that he had engaged in sexual communication with a child and had met a child following a period of sexual grooming.

According to court records, Tough had initiated contact through an online profile, believing he was communicating with a young schoolgirl. During their exchanges, he sent highly sexualized messages and images, clearly attempting to groom the individual for sexual activity. However, it was later revealed that the supposed child was not real; instead, the profile was operated by an adult member of the paedophile hunting team known as ‘Groom Resisters Scotland’. This organization specializes in posing online as children to identify and catch predators who seek to exploit minors.

The incident in question dates back to June 2018, when members of the ‘Groom Resisters Scotland’ team confronted Tough about his online activity. During this confrontation, they questioned him about his intentions and the nature of his communications. The team then contacted the police, leading to Tough’s arrest at the scene. The authorities took swift action following the team’s intervention, which played a crucial role in bringing the case to court.

In sentencing, the judge opted for a community payback order that will last for three years, emphasizing rehabilitation over incarceration. Additionally, Tough was ordered to register as a sex offender, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offenses. It is noteworthy that Tough has previously lived in Shetland, an area where he was known before moving to Aberdeen. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable individuals from predators operating under false pretenses.
